Kekana apologises for injuring Memela with nasty tackle

Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana took time out to apologise to Luvuyo Memela after he injured the Orlando Pirates winger on Monday night.

The pair clashed while going for a 50/50 ball and a high boot from Kekana left a gash just above Memela's knee, resulting in him being substituted off as a precaution.

The Sundowns skipper admitted the incident affected his performance for the rest of the match and was determined to make sure that his counterpart was recovering well.

"Fortunately it was a scratch. I was not happy and my match just ended because I was so sad. He went off with a stretcher, so I was not sure how he was doing. I went to the dressing room and found him showering because the rest of the team had not arrived and then I apologised," he told Kickoff.

"I want to check on him again today and see how he is doing."

Kekana is well aware of the fact that Memela spent most of last season injured with a knee problem, but the Pirates man reassured him that he would be okay.

"That's what had me worried the most. He just came back and then now he was being injured by me. He said 'It's alright, it's just a scratch'. I was relieved to see that he was fine."

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
