Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs chairman Kaizer Motaung has pleaded with the Amakhosi fans to be patient as the club is in the process of rebuilding itself.

Chiefs open their Absa Premiership campaign with a trip to face Highlands Park at Makhulong Stadium on Sunday.

The club have not won a trophy in four years, finished outside the top eight for the first time in 12 years last season and lost in the Nedbank Cup final to NFD outfit TS Galaxy to make matters worse.

The hierarchy have responded by signing Lazarous Kambole, Samir Nurkovic, Kearyn Baccus, James Kotei and Yagan Sasman. But Motaung believes this will not guarantee them success and has urged caution from the supporters.

“Looking at how busy the transfer window has been for many clubs, it promises to be a very exciting season and we are looking forward to a great season," Said Motaung.

"As Kaizer Chiefs, we have made notable changes to the playing personnel by releasing ten players and onboarding five new players. We have also added youngsters from our development structures, including Given Thibedi, Bontle Molefe and Njabulo Blom towards the end of the previous season.

“The process of making changes does not stop – it is ongoing and we always continue to look for suitable candidates for all identified departments. We continue to appeal for patience with the supporters as the process takes time and needs to done with great care.

“As we said at the end of last season, the rebuilding process for the 2019/20 season and beyond is aimed at ensuring that we restore this iconic institution to where it rightfully belongs – at the summit of South African football.

"Our supporters have always carried the club and continue to do so. They demonstrated by buying tickets last week and filling up the stadium. We hope to see more full stadiums this season.

“As we embark on another journey this season, it is encouraging that we start the season with another sold out stadium when we visit Highlands Park on Sunday, a clear demonstration that our people still love football and their club.”
