Johnson defends Josephs after Clever Boys shocker

Cape Town - AmaZulu coach Cavin Johnson says goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs did play poorly in the 3-0 defeat to Bidvest Wits though the responsibility for the loss is shared by the team.

Josephs appeared to be culpable of making some major blunders for at least two of Wits' three goals, as it seemed the 39-year-old was a little ring-rusty after not playing much last season.

Johnson generally fielded Siyabonga Mbatha in goal in 2018/19, however, much to plenty of surprise he opted to use the veteran shot-stopper between the sticks against the Students.

Such was the former Orlando Pirates keeper's performance, he even apologised to home fans after the match.

Johnson said: "I haven't spoken to him but I'm sure they were not happy with him because the second goal was also a mistake which he should've done better.

"Moeneeb is experienced. Many, many years of experience, he played for some of the bigger clubs in the country. He accepts defeat and a person that performs like that, you've got to forgive him.

"I don't regret starting with anyone. It's the biggest wake-up call, to say hey let's do better. This is not a one-man show, it's 35 of us. We need to work together as a team."

Usuthu have a chance to redeem themselves on Saturday when they face Polokwane City at the Pietersburg Stadium. Kickoff is 15:00.
