Jele reportedly set for Orlando Pirates extension

Orlando Pirates are rumoured to be close to handing captain Happy Jele a new one-year contract as his current deal ends in June.

The 33-year-old has been at the Buccaneers for nearly 14 years and remains a crucial part of the club's first team, having played 20 of the 23 Absa Premiership games this season.

The Soweto giants gave Jele a one-year deal this time last year and now look set to do the same, according to SowetanLive.

"Jele is getting another one-year extension, that's what Pirates are going to table for him. His agent, Jazzman and the club's management are supposed to meet sometime next week to discuss the new contract," a source said.

"I don't know if Jele will accept the one year because he still wants to play more years. It's a tricky situation. I don't know what will happen if he can say he wants more than a year. But because the chairperson [Irvin Khoza] loves Happy, it's promising they'll find common ground."

When asked about the contract situation, Pirates senior administrator Floyd Mbele stated that it will be revealed at a later stage.

"Do you think this is a right time to talk about players' contracts and all those things? We have a big problem to combat... coronavirus. As a club we're committed to play our role in that. We'll make proper announcements about players' contracts in due course," said Mbele, as quoted by SowetanLive.
