'Iron Duke' convinced Davids to join Orlando Pirates

Cape Town - Orlando Pirates assistant coach Fadlu Davids says a phone call with boss Dr Irvin Khoza convinced him to move to the club.

Davids joined Pirates as second assistant to coach Milutin Sredojevic and assistant Rulani Mokwena in January.

The 37-year-old was previously in charge of Maritzburg United but was sacked in December with the Team of Choice struggling at the bottom of the Absa Premiership.

However, he is highly rated in South African football as he guided United to fourth place in 2017/18 as well as to the final of the Nedbank Cup (where they lost to Free State Stars).

He told Pirates TV: "The move came about very quickly, I got one call and flew down to meet the chairperson (Irvin Khoza) on the one day and the next I was introduced to the (existing) coaches.

"I didn't have to think twice about when the opportunity came for me to join such a club with a huge fan-base, and not only a club but an institution.

"And of course, working with coach Micho and coach Rhulani was really the pull for me to immediately pack my bags and make the move to Johannesburg."

Davids has a UEFA B license, but will be supported by the side to continue his education towards earning a Pro License.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
