Injuries force Sangweni to retire

Cape Town - Orlando Pirates defender Siyabonga Sangweni has announced his retirement from football with immediate effect.

The former Bafana Bafana defender had been battling for fitness for the last two seasons but the last straw came after suffering a knee injury last November.

According to Orlando Pirates official Twitter account, the defender had to retire due to constant reoccurring injury problems.

"I've called this conference to announce the pre-mature retirement of Siyabonga Sangweni," said club chairperson, Irvin Khoza.

"Siyabonga has been plagued by injury & after consultation, the medics have confirmed that he has to end his career early.

"Siyabonga Sangweni has been a stalwart for this Club and has been a great leader. He has shown great commitment"

The defender hangs up his boots at the age of 34.
