Igesund urges positivity

Cape Town - Gordon Igesund has called on his SuperSport United players to lift their heads after two errors prove costly and saw them go down 2-0 to Mamelodi Sundowns in their derby clash at Atteridgeville on Saturday night.

“I’ve said to them all ‘heads up, these kind of errors happen in football. When we win, we win together and when we lose, we lose together’,” said Igesund after SuperSport were beaten for a second successive week and remained outside of the top eight places in the Premier Soccer League standings.

“To be honest with you, I was very disappointed. In the first half I thought we matched them in all departments and we had some very good chances. In the first-half there was no (Keegan) Dolly, no (Themba) Zwane, no (Khama) Billiat.

"They didn’t cause us any problems until the 43rd minute when we made a big error. Ronwen have away a cheap corner and, of course, they scored from that corner.

“We wanted to chase the game when we came out for the second-half but Dean Furman then made an error, right in the middle of the park. He gave the ball away.

"It was a bad error. I was confident that we could come back into the game after half-time because I knew we had the fire power on the bench. But to concede so soon after the break meant that after that it became very tough.”

But Igesund said he still felt his players had put in a good performance, in spite of Sundowns having several more second half chances once the game opened up and should have won by more than the 2-0 scoreline.

“I’m one to assess the game and feel we did well against the best team in the league. We can take the positives going forward and for the players, they need to know that they played well but we made two errors and we got punished for them.”
