Igesund targets out of favour Pirates duo

Cape Town - Highlands Park coach Gordon Igesund is reportedly targeting a move for Orlando Pirates pair Ayanda Gcaba and Patrick Phungwayo as he looks to beef up his squad in 2017.

Gcaba and Phungwayo appear to have fallen down the pecking order at Pirates in recent times and the arrival of Marc van Heerden and James Okwuosa has seemingly blunted their fortunes even further.

Van Heerden, who arrived from Chippa United, is expected to give Thabo Matlaba competition in the left-back position, meaning Phungwayo would be third choice at best. In addition, Okwuosa's arrival from the Chilli Boys means Gcaba will likely to struggle to get playing time in central defence.

As such, Soccer Laduma report that the pair are a target for the Lions of the North and a move could happen in the near future. The publication said: "Phungwayo and his Bucs team-mate, Ayanda Gcaba, are some of the players targeted by coach Gordon Igesund as he looks to bulk up the Lions of the North."

The Pirates duo have made just seven league appearances collectively in 2016/17 and a move elsewhere may be just the tonic needed to rejuvenate their flagging careers.
