Hunt: We made it difficult for ourselves

Cape Town - Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt believes his side 'made it difficult for themselves' in the 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Bloemfontein Celtic on Wednesday evening.

Wits took a 1-0 lead in to half-time of the Absa Premiership encounter but let Celtic back in to the game in the second half with strikes from Menzi Masuku and Andile Fikizolo making it look as if Phunya Sele Sele would take all three points.

But two goals in the last ten minutes from Haashim Domingo and Gift Motupa spared Wits' blushes.

And Hunt believes his side were almost guilty of shooting themselves in the foot after missing a host of opportunities in the first half which would have put the game to bed.

“Oh‚ for you it was a five-goal thriller but for me it was a five-goal nightmare‚” Hunt told SuperSport TV.

“Obviously we made it so difficult for ourselves.

“We could have been really out of sight in the first half… I mean the chances we had. They never really had anything in the first half.

“And then they get back in the game and they look like winning the game. We just got a second wind and it was good‚ tenacious and the attitude was good.

“Obviously we were a little bit heavy and you can see from all the travelling.

“But ja‚ we could fight. I mean we played well in the first half and really created some great chances and we could have been out at half-time and rested on the ball (in the second half).

“But we couldn’t and had to chase the game‚ and we chased it well.”

The positive result means the Clever Boys have consolidated fourth position on the standings. Should they win their remaining games in hand, Hunt's charges will be two points off pacesetters Kaizer Chiefs.

And the Students' mentor is well aware that games in hand are not guaranteed points.

“I can’t really say too much about that‚” said Hunt.

“I just worry that we still got a couple of games in hand and we’re going to play on Saturday night (against Cape Town City) in Cape Town against a team that’s fighting for their lives.

“We’re losing players thick and fast and we lost another one‚ Nange (on Wednesday night) you know.

“So it’s disappointing but we’ll put a team out and fight again.”
