Cape Town - Bidvest Wits duo Gavin Hunt and Lehlohonolo Majoro have been named as the Absa Premiership Coach and Player of the Month for the February.
Hunt returned to the podium for the monthly recognition awards at the Premier Soccer League offices for the first time in the 2017/18 season, after guiding his side to a string of impressive outings during the month of February.
In that period, Hunt managed to make positive changes to his squad and guided Wits away from the bottom of the log, winning two tough away games at Golden Arrows and Cape Town City, while they played to a draw against title-chasing Kaizer Chiefs at home.
The judges commended Hunt for keeping his cool during difficult times in the first round of the season and maintaining his discipline even when results weren’t forthcoming to seeing Bidvest Wits eventually bounce back to winning ways in the second round of the campaign.
Hunt beat Maritzburg United’s Fadlu Davids, Free State Stars’ Luc Eymael and Orlando Pirates coach Milutin Sredojevic, to win the award which was voted for by a panel of broadcast media, analysts and former players.
Bidvest Wits’ latest addition to the squad and in-form striker in the league, Majoro, beat Mamelodi Sundowns’ Percy Tau, Orlando Pirates striker Justin Shonga and Itumeleng Khune of Kaizer Chiefs to win the individual Player of the Month accolade.
Majoro saw the panel of judges single him out as the best performing player in that period owing to the four crucial goals he scored in three games, which helped his side turn their fortunes around during a difficult period and climb up to the top half of the standings.
He brought hope to a struggling Wits side while being a constant threat for defenders.
Meanwhile Kaizer Chiefs striker Leonardo Castro's first-time strike with his weaker foot against Baroka FC to open his account for the Soweto giants was awarded as the Goal of the Month.
CONGRATULATIONS to @KaizerChiefs striker, Leonardo Castro for winning the #AbsaPrem Goal of the Month award.
