Hunt: Mahlambi 'can do what he likes'

Cape Town - Wits coach Gavin Hunt insists he has no problem with former Clever Boy Phakamani Mahlambi's exuberant celebrations during the 1-1 draw with Mamelodi Sundowns.

The 21-year-old departed Wits for Egyptian giants Al Ahly on a four-year contract in 2017 but made just 12 appearances before sealing a return to the Absa Premiership ahead of the August transfer deadline.

And, in his first game against his former employers, Mahlambi scored after just seven minutes to give his side the lead at Bidvest Stadium.

When asked if he had a problem with Mahlambi's celebrations, Hunt told TimesLIVE website: "They (Sundowns) pay his wages and he can do what he likes.

"That business of kissing badges is a lot of nonsense. Not celebrating goals... who pays your wages?

"They (Sundowns) pay his wages and he can do what he likes. We made our money (when they sold him to Al Ahly and later to Sundowns)."

Hunt was also asked for his assessment of Cole Alexander's performance in the 1-1 draw with Sundowns, with the midfielder having played below his usual high standard.

Hunt added: "Cole has been the player of the year for us so far I think.

"He can have an off-day here and there but otherwise he's been our best player this season‚ hands down‚ hands down."

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
