Cape Town - Wits coach Gavin Hunt revealed he was always optimistic of his side's chances of catching Cape Town City after a horror start to the Premiership.

The Clever Boys, defending league champions, slipped to the bottom of the table and struggled to break away throughout the first half of the season.

However, after seven matches unbeaten in the Premiership, they have climbed to eighth place. Furthermore, the Students are now just three points behind Cape Town City, who have been amongst the leading pack for most of the campaign.

After Wits' 2-1 win over Benni McCarthy's side, Hunt said: "We got 28 points. You know I said to them [the players]: 'I think we can catch Cape Town City,' and they all laughed at me because Cape Town City were 20 points ahead of us. Now, they're three.

"Who knows where we can come? Our form is good; we have more than two points per game in the second round and that’s what you want. It's the best form in the league.

"Our first round was diabolical. We had such a bad start. But a couple of new signings have been good for us‚ a bit of freshness in the team and we are still missing a lot of players‚ a lot of good players.

"But there is a long way to go - we have got eight games to go."

After winning away at City, Wits' next fixture is on home soil as they host Baroka at the Bidvest Stadium on Friday.

Kick-off is at 20:00
