Gyimah relishing game time

Johannesburg - Despite failing to cement his place in the first team since joining them in July last year, Orlando Pirates defensive midfielder Edwin Gyimah said he is relishing his new role at as a regular centre-back.

The Ghanaian international joined the Buccaneers from Mpumalanga Black Aces ahead of the 2015/16 Absa Premiership campaign and has found the competition for a starting berth much tougher than anticipated.

Gyimah, however, cited that a decision to join Pirates was a career risk as he was fully aware that he would not walk straight into the first team but he was always willing to work hard and fight for his place like the rest of the players.

“Everyone wants to play for a big team like Pirates in the PSL,” said Gyimah.

“I used to watch the Chiefs and Pirates’ matches when I was still at SuperSport United and I had ambitions to play for a big team and win trophies.

“Yes the competition has always been tough but sometimes in life you need to take risks in order to grow as a player.

“People always talk saying you made the wrong decision but for me as a player I knew what I wanted and I want to work hard and win my place in the starting line-up.

“Now that I’m playing I want to be there and kill myself for the team and I think that if I do that it won’t be easy for teams to beat us. Playing for Pirates is a big motivation for me.”
