Cape Town - Ajax Cape Town bizarrely stated that five of their players had gone AWOL for a scheduled pre-season friendly against Cape Town All Stars to promote their new away playing kit.
The Urban Warriors took to Twitter to 'confirm' speculation that five players, Goalkeeper Brandon Petersen, Midfielders Neo Makua, Bantu Mzwakali and defenders Rheece Evans and Isaac Nhlapo had gone AWOL and that an internal investigation would be taking place.
"With just over a week to go till the start of the season, this is very disappointing," Menzo who was in on the joke said.
A club statement read: "The five players have made contact with the club, but have yet to give reason why they failed to come to Ikamva today.
The club will launch an internal investigation into the matter and we will be making no further comment."
