Fit again Malesela back to work

Cape Town - Chippa United head coach Dan Malesela is back from a recent ailment and will be on the bench for Wednesday night's Nedbank Cup match against Witbank Spurs.

The last 32 encounter takes place at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

Malesela was admitted to hospital last week, leading to speculation that he had suffered a heart attack.

However, club spokesman Luthando Zibeko says that the head coach's condition was not as serious as reported.

"It was nothing but a back problem," Zibeko told the Star.

"The doctors said he needed seven days off from work in order to recover. And that's what we did. We have given him the seven days off.

"He began working with the boys and I can assure the fans he’ll be at Wednesday's game."

Having lost to lower league opposition in the last two Nedbank Cups, Zibeko says that Chippa are determined not to take National First Division side Spurs lightly.

"Witbank Spurs are a quality side. Coach Malesela knows them well," said Zibeko.

"We cannot lose to a lower division side again.

"I believe we have made great improvement in the last two seasons. Just recently, we reached the MTN8 semi-finals.

"This was not the case when we got promoted to the elite league a few seasons ago."

Kick off is at 19:30.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
