Cape Town - Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez believes Itumeleng Khune can only be properly rated as a 'keeper if he tests himself against the best in Europe.
Khune is widely regarded as the best shot-stopper South Africa has produced in a number of years, and is Bafana Bafana's undisputed number one as well.
With that said, Fernandez, who spent four seasons with Arminia Bielefeld in the German Bundesliga, takes the view that the Glamour Boys star needs to prove his worth abroad and really test his mettle.
He told Soccer Laduma website: "To be honest, you can't compare playing in African leagues to conditions out in Europe. You can't compare the Bundesliga, LaLiga, Serie A and English Premier League to local football in the Absa Premiership.
"Khune is a very good goalkeeper, don’t get me wrong. His stats are extremely good and he is undoubtedly one of the best ‘keepers in the country, and his distribution is a big, big strong point of his.
"But you can't compare what he's up against to what the guys in the big leagues are playing against."
