Ex-PSL referee supports Gaston Sirino red card

Cape Town - Former Absa Premiership official Faiek Daniels believes Victor Gomes was correct to send off Gaston Sirino during the clash between Mamelodi Sundowns and Maritzburg United.

Sirino saw red in the league encounter on Tuesday night after receiving two yellow cards in quick succession.

The first came for time-wasting whereas the second came as a result of a dismissive hand gesture made by the talented forward.

Gomes wasted no time in ejecting the 23-year-old although the Brazilians were able to hang on to a vital 2-1 victory.

Speaking to Soccer Laduma website, Daniels said: "The thing is, nobody other than the referee will understand why he actually gave a yellow or a red card.

"The law is specific, it is called dissent. Dissent can be by word or action. He (Sirino) did it by action by showing the referee like he was saying, 'Hey, go man'. That is a cautionable offence.

"A lot of people, because they think with the heart...in football there are rules and you need to follow the rules.

"If you don't follow the rules, you need to be punished accordingly. The referee was just following the rules."

The player faces a two-match suspension for the sending off which means Downs will be without a crucial performer against SuperSport United and Baroka in April.
