Ex-Bucs star Erasmus in limbo after Rennes release

Cape Town - Former Orlando Pirates striker Kermit Erasmus could be in limbo until June after his contract was terminated by Ligue 1 club Stade Rennais on Thursday.

Having joined the team in 2016, Erasmus struggled to break into the first team and spent a loan spell with Ligue 2 outfit Lens.

With just one league goal to his name during his three years in France, it seems the 27-year-old has failed to make the grade.

"The Rennais F.C. and Kermit Erasmus Stadium have earlier terminated the contract that linked them since January 2016," the club earlier tweeted about his exit.

"The player is therefore free from any commitment. The Red & Black wish him a full success and a lot of happiness for the rest of his career."

However, according to reports, FIFA rules state that a player may not join another side if his contract is terminated outside of a transfer window.

With the January window having already slammed shut, the Bafana Bafana international could have to wait until June to sign for another team.

Earlier in his career the forward enjoyed success with the Sea Robbers as he scored 17 Premiership goals in 48 appearances.
