Cape Town - Maritzburg United coach Muhsin Ertugral believes that restoring the confidence of the struggling Siphesihle Ndlovu will be key to improving the Team of Choice's fortunes.

Ndlovu won the Premiership's Best Midfielder of the Season last campaign as well as the Young Player of the Season, however, has struggled in 2018/19 for his best form.

In 14 Absa Premiership matches the 22-year-old is yet to score and recently has been used as a substitute by Ertugral.

Nonetheless, the Turk explained that dropping him to the bench was to protect the player and not to punish him.

He told the Sowetan: "Obviously he has dropped in his approach but he will be back. We need to motivate him as quickly as possible.

"We need him at his best. I am determined to help him retrieve his best form.

"The willingness he [Ndlovu] had last season, is what we want from him again this season. Sometimes you need to protect him. put him on the bench.

"Not playing him is more about protecting him than a punishment or something."

The forward will no doubt hope to produce better form when United face Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday night at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.

Kick-off is 19:30.
