In form defender Rushine de Reuck has attributed his impressive displays for Maritzburg United this season to the experience he gained while playing in Portugal.
The 24-year-old defender has been excellent for the Team of Choice, with the team entering the enforced break in an impressive fifth place in the Absa Premiership standings.
With the coronavirus pandemic calling a halt to all sporting activities, De Reuck, who is being touted for Absa Premiership Defender of the Season, says time in Pacos de Ferreira's B side under current Roma coach Paulo Fonseca was invaluable.
The former Milano centre-back told the Sowetan: "I learnt a lot of things in Portugal, especially the importance of tactical awareness.
"I can see that all the things I learnt there are helping me at Maritzburg this season.
"I was coached by Paulo Fonseca, a top coach with a good heart. He always pushed me. I am happy to see him coaching Roma now."
De Reuck added that the only thing he will be focused on when the league resumes is helping Maritzburg finish in the top four.
"I am very humbled by hearing people saying I should be the defender of the season, but I don't look into that too much because to me the most important thing is to achieve as a team.
"Our goal as a team is to end the season in the top four. I just want to help the team, individual goals come second to me," he said.
De Reuck has started all of Maritzburg's 24 league games this season, with the side conceding just 17 goals.
