Davids: Give young coaches a chance

Cape Town - Maritzburg interim coach Fadlu Davids says young coaches should be given more opportunities in South Africa, provided they are prepared to do the hard graft.

Davids was announced on Monday as the PSL Coach of the Month for April after wins over Ajax Cape Town, Baroka FC and Chippa United ensured the Team of Choice were not sucked into the relegation zone, but instead find themselves challenging for the top-eight.

The 35-year-old is in his third stint as caretaker coach, having played for the club as a striker.

In the eleven games he has been in charge this season, he has won six, drawn three and lost two.

The Cape Town-born tactician refused to comment on his future, but rather spoke about the importance of young coaches being given an opportunity.

"I don't comment about the interim head coach or whatever it is, I’m leaving it until the end of the season," he told the media.

"I think it's important that young coaches are given an opportunity in South Africa, but on the same hand young coaches with potential have to empower themselves. They have to aim to be the best.

"A lot of the time coaches want recognition without putting in the work and at the end of the day, yes, we should be given opportunities.

"But we should also empower ourselves and set ourselves to the same standards that are set overseas. If we raise that bar then things will improve and South African football as a whole will improve," he added.
