Da Gama: 'If you can't defend at this level, go play in the NFD'

Cape Town - Highlands Park head coach Owen da Gama was left frustrated by his side's lapse in concentration which allowed Mamelodi Sundowns to earn a dramatic 1-0 win on Wednesday.

The Lions of the North seemed to be headed for a hard-fought point at the Lucas Moripe Stadium until substitute Mauricio Affonso's last-gasp winner in the 90th minute.

"With a minute to go and you defend the way we defended, I am very disappointed. All credit and congratulations to Sundowns, they pushed hard and worked well, they have quality players, but in saying that we had a point and we had to defend for just one more minute," Da Gama told SuperSport TV.

"If you can't do that at this level, then you must go play in the NFD (GladAfrica Championship) and not the PSL (Absa Premiership). Here it's about when you've got a point, you consolidate. It happened so many times last season and we finally thought we had got it right.

"But once again we just left a player on his own and he scored. With regards to our attack, I thought we went too wide at times. When we got the ball in an attacking position we were going wide, for what reason?

"I'm very disappointed to lose in this fashion. You'd expect Sundowns to outplay you, beat you 3-0 or 4-0, no problem but not to lose like this.

"We'll keep on learning and trying our best and we'll try and rectify that."

Highlands Park are sitting in sixth position in the Absa Premiership standings having won three and drawn two of their seven games thus far.
