City could pip Sundowns to CAF CL spot

Cape Town - Cape Town City FC have the chance to represent South Africa in the CAF Champions League with second place still up for grabs in the Absa Premiership.

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) have two Champions League spots available which are secured by the PSL champions and the team which ends the campaign in second place.

Bidvest Wits were crowned 2016/17 champions on Wednesday after beating Polokwane City 2-0 at home, while their only challengers, defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, were held to a 2-2 home draw by Maritzburg United.

Meanwhile, Cape Town City claimed a 1-0 victory over Golden Arrows at the Athlone Stadium in their final home match of the season.

That victory over Abafana Bes'thende moved City to within a point of second placed Sundowns with one match in the season remaining.

Eric Tinkler's charges travel to the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday, May 27 for a clash against Polokwane City while Pitso Mosimane's Brazilians take on relegation-threatened Highlands Park at Makhulong Stadium.

Both matches kick off at 15:00.

The permutations are simple.

If Sundowns win, they will finish second regardless of what Cape Town City do, and will secure that all-important runners-up spot.

If City win and Sundowns lose or draw, the Cape side will get the chance at challenging for Africa's biggest club prize.

A City draw coupled with a Sundowns defeat - which would see the teams end level on points - won't be good enough for the Cape side to finish second due to their inferior goal differential.

City have already secured a spot in the CAF Confederations Cup after securing a third place finish in the Premiership.

The second club to represent South Africa at the Confederations Cup is yet to be decided as the Nedbank Cup is still in progress.
