Chippa miss two penalties in Stars draw

Port Elizabeth - Chippa United missed two penalties as they were held to a 1-1 draw with Platinum Stars in a PSL clash at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Friday evening.

Thembinkosi Lorch opened the scoring on 27 minutes before Robert Ng'ambi's equaliser on the hour mark.
The hosts, though, contrived to miss two spot kicks and only had themselves to blame as they collected a solitary point.

Chippa started well with Andile Mbenyane seeing an early free-kick hit Stars' defensive wall before Mbongeni Mzimela did well to punch clear a corner.

Chippa should have taken a 12th minute lead from the penalty mark after Siphiwe Sithole handballed inside the box, but Mzimela saved Marc Van Heerden's spot-kick.

But the miss proved to be inconsequential as Lorch finished well with the left boot after picking up a Lerato Manzini pass.

Daniel Akpeyi had to be alert to punch clear a Stars corner on the half-hour mark from Vuyo Mere as the visitors looked to find a quick-fire equaliser.

Akpeyi could do nothing to deny Ng'ambi from heading home a 60th minute Mere corner, but he managed to deny Stars a second when he held a Ng'ambi shot six minutes later.

Akpeyi was relieved to keep out another Ng'ambi effort five minutes later as second half Chippa substitute Mbulelo Wambi was unsuccessful with a 70th minute effor; as was Van Heerden eight minutes later with a free-kick from range.

Chippa though should have claimed all three points in the 89th minute of the tie with a penalty that Lerato Manzini blazed over the bar after Thamsanqa Gwabeni was adjudged to have handled inside the area.

The result saw the hosts jump from seventh to fourth, on nine points from their six games, while Stars remained in 10th spot, with six points.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
