Chiefs warning over trial scams

Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs have warned supporters and parents that an invitation for player trials at the Soweto giants, posted on social media, is a scam.

The Soweto club's statement follows almost two weeks after Ajax Cape Town revealed that five boys had arrived at the club expecting to be welcomed for trials.

The Cape Town-based club knew nothing of this arrangement, though, raising serious questions over the threat of fraud and child trafficking.

A statement on the club's official website read: "There is a false invitation doing the rounds on social media that there will be trials at Kaizer Chiefs at Johannesburg's Ellis Park Stadium on 26 March 2016.

"We want to warn the public that no such event is taking place under the auspices of Kaizer Chiefs.

"The scam is luring unsuspecting and gullible members of the public to pay with their hard earned moneys for an opportunity to participate in these so-called trials.

"More disturbing is that these perpetrators are masquerading in social media circles as Kaizer Motaung Junior, the recently retired Chiefs striker and son of Kaizer Chiefs Chairman Kaizer Motaung.

"We ask the public to be aware of this scam and reiterate categorically that Kaizer Chiefs is not planning to hold trials as purported.

"The Club will investigate the matter and keep the public informed when necessary."
