Chiefs in defensive crisis after suffering fresh injury blow

Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs are suffering with something of an injury crisis with the news that Lorenzo Gordinho has been ruled out with a fractured hand.

The central defender, who only recently returned from Bloemfontein Celtic on loan, injured his hand for Chiefs' MultiChoice Diski Challenge side last weekend. It means Gordinho joins an extensive injury list which includes Ramahlwe Mphahlele, Joseph Molangoane, Itumeleng Khune, Philani Zulu and Mulomowandau Mathoho.

The 24-year-old will undergo surgery on the affected limb though it us unclear when he may make a return to the fold.

Coach Ernst Middendorp told the club's official website: "It's unfortunate Lorenzo Gordinho is ruled out with a hand fracture. We are still waiting for Ramahlwe Mphahlele to return to full fitness as well.

"We hope to not have Lorenzo out for too long. There's still a bit of time required to have Joseph Molangoane, Itumeleng Khune, Philani Zulu and Mulomowandau Mathoho return to action."

The Glamour Boys take on AmaZulu on Wednesday evening in Durban as they look to return to winning ways in the Absa Premiership after a recent defeat to Zambia's Zesco United in a CAF Confederations Cup playoff first leg tie.

Kick-off is at 19:30.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
