Chiefs have to settle for a point

Cape Town - Bidvest Wits came from behind to claim a 1-1 league draw against title-hopefuls Kaizer Chiefs at the Bidvest Stadium on Saturday evening.

Both sides struggled to create clear openings in the first half, with Chiefs having the first opportunity when Gustavo Paez fired straight at Wits keeper Darren Keet in the 13th minute.

The hosts had a couple of efforts on goal midway through the opening stanza through Edwin Gyimah, but Khune saved the first shot while the second sailed over the bar.

Chiefs defender Kgotso Moleko was not far off with a powerfully struck effort from nearly 40-yards out eight minutes before the interval, and the deadlock was broken a few minutes later when Siphiwe Tshabalala floated in a perfect cross which Ryan Moon attacked with purpose to head past Keet.

James Keene could have squared things up just after the restart when he was played in by Daylon Claasen, but the Englishman’s radar was off as he steered wide from a great position.

But Wits had their goal soon after when Sifiso Hlanti's cross from the left was headed in at the near post by Lehlohonolo Majoro.

Moon could have restored the Glamour Boys' lead 20 minutes from time, but blazed a header over goal from a good position. Chiefs substitute Siphelele Ntshangase made an impact as he had a shot blocked by a defender and another saved by Keet, who also kept out Leonardo Castro in the 83rd minute.

The Clever Boys though nearly stole all three points in the final minute of regulation time when Bongolethu Jayiya's attempted clearance on a Claasen cross missed his own goal by inches.

The point earned sees Chiefs seven points behind league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns with 10 games to play.
