Celtic out to dent Wits' title surge

Cape Town - Bloemfontein Celtic will look to break their winless streak in the Absa Premiership when they host Bidvest Wits at Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium

Celtic’s winless run was stretched to nine matches when they were beaten 1-0 at regional rivals Free State Stars on January 23.

The Bloemfontein side has claimed seven points from six home matches this season.

Phunya Sele Sele are placed ninth on the Absa Premiership log with 17 points from 15 matches.

Wits recorded their biggest win of the season when they crushed Polokwane City 5-0 on January 22.

The Johannesburg side has claimed 13 points from seven away matches this season.

The Clever Boys are placed second on the Absa Premiership log with 32 points from 15 matches.

In head-to-head stats, Celtic and Wits have met in 52 league matches since 1985.

The Clever Boys have claimed 21 wins compared to 16 for Phunya Sele Sele, while 15 matches have been drawn.

Celtic have won 11 of their 25 home matches against Wits, suffering seven defeats in the process.

When the teams met earlier this season they played to a goalless stalemate in Johannesburg.

The teams’ last four league meetings have produced just three goals.
