Celtic level with Wits after narrow win

Cape Town - Bloemfontein Celtic upset the apple cart this weekend with a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Bidvest Wits.

As it happened: Mamelodi Sundowns 0-0 Orlando Pirates

Haashim Domingo opened the scoring at the Bidvest Stadium 57 minutes. Tshegofatso Mabaso then drew Celtic level from the penalty spot on 81 minutes before securing the winner just four minutes later.

Wits may have secured a draw, but for the heroics of Patrick Tignyemb to deny Deon Hotto.

There were chances for both sides, with Victor Letsoalo unable to beat Darren Keet when one-on-one with the Wits stopper, while Simon Murray was denied by Tignyemb as the striker attempted an audacious effort from the half-way line.

Thabang Monare made Tignyemb work from his excellent free-kick on 53 minutes ahead of a well-taken free-kick from Domingo that flew in off the underside of the crossbar.

With his side trailing, Steve Komphela introduced Mabaso to affect the outcome, and he managed to do just that with a brace.

The club's top scorer smashed home from the penalty spot after being fouled by Robyn Johannes, who was subsequently dismissed.

Mabaso then slotted home after rounding Keet to end a thoroughly miserable night for Wits, who wasted the chance to move level with Orlando Pirates the top of the table, after they were held to a 0-0 draw with Mamelodi Sundowns.

Celtic though ended the evening in third place, just behind Wits, but level on 20 points, and having played a game less.
