Carelse: Lack of character at Chiefs

Cape Town - Martin Carelse admits he is worried about the character of Kaizer Chiefs players and believes their lack of depth will prove costly.

The former Amakhosi defender claims some of the players lacked courage in the 2-0 defeat against Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup Last-32 at the weekend and rejected the notion some fans have that Steve Komphela needs to build the team around new signing Wiliam Twala.

"The thing about Chiefs that troubles me is that I heard somebody saying Steve must rely more on Twala," Carelse told Goal website.

"When he came on, all the other guys seemed more scared of being dribbled by these guys from Pirates.

"In most cases, you saw this guy Rakhale dribbling with the ball and nobody wanted to mark him.

"I couldn't understand that no one seemed to have the courage to go to him and say; 'let me go and get the ball from him'."

Carelse has ruled the Glamour Boys out of the title race, claiming they can't compete with the players Mamelodi Sundowns boss Pitso Mosimane has at his disposal.

"Depth plays a big part because if you find something not going well on the ground, you can always look at the bench," the 35-year-old added.

"Like Mamelodi Sundowns, they have got the likes of Anthony Laffor and Katlego Mashego. Whereas at Chiefs, if Katsande is not around then their defence is not guarded."
