Cape Town - Cape Town City chairman John Comitis has confirmed that the club turned down the chance to sign Mark Mayambela.

The 32-year-old Mayambela had been training with the Citizens and was thought to be impressing head coach Benni McCarthy, who was looking to add a wide player to his squad after Gift Links made a move overseas.

However, Comitis has revealed that the club instead signed 22-year-old forward Fagrie Lakay after the player had been released by Bidvest Wits.

Comitis explained to KickOff: "There's no latest on Mayambela, we have signed (Fagrie) Lakay and that's that, we're going to stick to that.

"We looked at Mayambela for wide right, because we were trying to get (Aubrey) Ngoma at the time, and then Lakay became available and I discussed it with the coach, and the coach sorted out the problem.

"He was happy to sign Lakay. At this stage we are doing nothing, I have signed Lakay, I'm not signing two right-sided players. That's why I signed Lakay."

Mayambela, who was fan favourite at Orlando Pirates, decided not to renew his contract with Chippa United at the end of last season.
