Cape Town - Cape Town City FC have announced Africa's leading gaming platform SportPesa as the club's new shirt sponsor.
"It's the first ever in South African football and we're pleased to announce our new sponsor SportPesa," said club owner John Comitis at a press conference held in Cape Town.
"SportPesa are a betting company who are partners with various clubs, including English giants Arsenal. It's more than a commercial decision but a football one.
"We've signed a 4-year deal and we'd like to thank SportPesa for the opportunity. This is a credit to you the players for this deal."
New head coach and all-time leading Bafana Bafana scorer Benni McCarthy added, "I'd like to thank SportPesa and with their help this adds to City being able to achieve our goals for the upcoming season and gives us added confidence as a club to compete."
The ambitious Comitis believes that with such a sponsorship and relationship, Cape Town football fans can possibly expect big footballing teams to visit the club during pre-season.
"I think part of this commitment could see teams like Everton, Hull City and Torino visiting Cape Town in future."
While adding that the financial side of the deal would now see City "right up there with the big guns" to compete for players in the transfer market.
As the local season kicks off this weekend, the Citizens are gearing up to face Polokwane City in their MTN8 quarter-final clash on Saturday.
Rise and Shine head coach Bernard Molekwa will hope his charges can upset the Mother City side at the Cape Town Stadium.
Kick-off is at 15:00.
