The former Kaizer Chiefs star suffered an Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury in his knee at training, and coach Fadlu Davids confirmed he was set to be out for an extended period of time.
Buchanan has been unfortunate when it comes to knee injuries as he suffered a similar ACL blow while in the colours of Bloemfontein Celtic.
Davids said in a statement: "It's a blow for us to lose him [Buchanan]. It happened at training, he will have a scan today to determine the extent of the injury.
"But it's definitely an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament), maybe not a complete rupture, either grade 2 or 3, which will put him out for a couple of months."
The 27-year-old will likely be devastated by the occurrence as he started three of United's opening four games of the 2018/19 campaign.
