Cape Town - Bloemfontein Celtic national supporters club chairperson Pule Mabena has confirmed nine supporters were arrested after the abandoned match against Cape Town City.

The Absa Premiership clash on Sunday afternoon was called off after 23 minutes due to Celtic fans seemingly launching a protest in the stands against the club's leadership.

Certain fans in the commotion held up banners which read: 'Max must go...' This appears to be a protest against Siwelele boss Max Tshabalala due to the insecure financial situation of the team.

Nonetheless, Mabena confirmed that nine fans were taken into custody by police for their actions during the protest.

He told Kickoff: "Yes there were fans that were arrested. We went to the police station but were not allowed to see them as we were told they were still to be charged."

Meanwhile, the PSL issued a statement condemning the hooliganism.

It read: "The Premier Soccer League (PSL) condemns the act of hooliganism at the Absa Premiership fixture between Bloemfontein Celtic and Cape Town City on Sunday afternoon, 14 April 2019.

"The match referee called off the match after some supporters invaded the pitch and threw objects on the field.

"The League is awaiting full reports from the match commissioner and other security role players on what transpired.

"On the abandoned fixture, the PSL will communicate details of a future date in due course."
