Benni throws in the towel for PSL title race

Cape Town - Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy says his side have no chance of winning the Absa Premiership title and will focus on finishing the season on a high.

The Citizens lost ground in the title race after a 1-0 defeat to Golden Arrows at the weekend that left the side from the Cape in fourth place on the table, four points behind leaders Orlando Pirates.

With five games of the season remaining, McCarthy's team are still very much in the hunt, but the former Bafana Bafana striker feels they can only finish between second and fourth place.

McCarthy said after the defeat against Arrows: "Any coach would love to finish in first position, but the reality is that we are out of it, we can only finish between second and fourth position.

"For us now it's just about making sure we finish the season in high spirits."

McCarthy also revealed it will be difficult for City to emulate the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns to do well in CAF competitions as the Citizens just do not have the resources to compete.

The Cape Town City mentor continued: "I think for the players it would be nice to play in Africa, but we need to be honest, we don't have the luxury of a big squad like Sundowns and Pirates, we are just a small team, we can't handle too many games.

"You have MTN8, Telkom Knockout, Nedbank Cup and league, so with CAF it can be too much for our small team, we have to be realistic."
