Benni defends Erasmus sending off - 'He was provoked'

Cape Town - Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy called Kermit Erasmus' red card for kicking Mothobi Mvala a foolish act though said the Highlands Park man had provoked it.

City and the Lions of the North played out to a 1-1 draw in Tuesday's Absa Premiership clash at Cape Town Stadium.

It left the Citizens with 10 men for the majority of the game and it seemed he would cost his side the three points.

Tendai Ndoro opened the scoring for Highlands early in the second stanza, however, forward Craig Martin proved to be the hero as his diving header saw the teams share the spoils in the Mother City.

A video is now being shared on social media of Erasmus' kick on Mvala and there is little doubt it is a straight red.

Speaking after the 1-1 draw, McCarthy told reporters: "We tried to make the most of it, Kermit - stupid reaction, provoked I would say, then you bite and leave your team with 10 men.

"They couldn’t handle him and that was the only way they could try and stop us and get a point from the game was to get one of our players sent-off."

The sending off means the forward will miss the next games against Chippa United and Orlando Pirates respectively.

The 28-year-old will no doubt regret his actions as he misses out on a chance to play against his former employers - the Sea Robbers.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
