Benni can be our Ferguson, says Comitis

Cape Town - Cape Town City owner John Comitis is hoping that Benni McCarthy can bring more success to the club before he eventually leaves for greener pastures.

The Citizens took a gamble on McCarthy when he replaced Eric Tinkler at the helm ahead of the 2017/18 season, having only worked as an assistant coach prior to his appointment.

The move paid off though, as the 40-year-old guided the newly-formed club to the MTN8 final and a fifth-place finish in the Premiership on debut.

McCarthy went one better this term in winning the MTN8 title to give City their maiden trophy, and the former South Africa international has since completed his UEFA Pro Coaching Licence.

Comitis hailed the achievement, which sees Bafana Bafana's all-time leading goalscorer join Zeca Marques and Mich d'Avray as the only South Africans to obtain the sought-after coaching badge.

He also hopes that McCarthy will repay the faith shown in him by establishing the team from the Mother City as a force to be reckoned with, much like Sir Alex Ferguson did at Manchester United.

"I'm completely smitten," Comitis was quoted as saying by IOL website. "There are a little more than 8,000 coaches in the world with a Pro Licence. Of those, there are only two black coaches in Africa to have done so, and Benni is one of the two. What more can I say about the man?

"But, having achieved the highest coaching qualification in Europe, as a club we are asking that Benni is patient with us. As a coach, he has grown and will continue to go from strength to strength. When he eventually leaves us, we hope that it will be for something big.

"For now, while he is with City, we are hoping that we have found our Ferguson."
