Baloyi: Josephs deserves Bafana call-up

Cape Town - Brian Baloyi admits he can't understand why Bidvest Wits goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs is not part of the national team set-up.

The former Orlando Pirates shot-stopper distanced himself from selection in 2014 after he was blamed by sections of the local media for Bafana's early exit in the CHAN tournament.

Be that as it may, his performances in the Absa Premiership have remained consistent, and with ten clean sheets in 21 games this season, he's rated as the best keeper in the country.

Baloyi, who's also a former South Africa international goalkeeper, feels coach Shakes Mashaba should have included the 35-year-old in his squad, especially during a time where Ithumeleng Khune lacks match fitness.

However, Baloyi admits the decision to leave out the likes of Sherwin Naiker and Brighton Mhlongo was the right call due to their lack of international experience.

"For me, if you look at who has been playing regularly and who has the experience, it's Moeneeb Josephs," the Amakhosi goalkeeping coach told Kickoff. "That would have been the logical choice.

"Sometimes as a coach you need to swallow your pride and go to the players, go to their level and talk to them.

"We all know that the coach is under pressure at the moment to deliver and he wants to qualify, and goalkeeper is a very important position in the team.

"A guy like Naicker – I'm one of the guys who's been saying he's been doing well – but at international level it's a different thing. He doesn't even have junior international experience, and it's the same with Brighton as well.

"I think the coach was caught in a Catch 22 situation. He has to make decisions which, at the end of the day, is not going to make a lot of people happy."
