Arrows, Pirates share points in Durban

Orlando Pirates huffed and puffed but ultimately could not break down Golden Arrows as the teams played to an entertaining goalless draw in an Absa Premiership clash at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium on Saturday.

The Buccaneers were looking to return to winning ways after a 1-0 loss to Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto derby last weekend while hosts Arrows played to a 1-1 draw against Highlands Park in their last encounter.

It was the Soweto giants who made all the early running without creating any clear-cut chances.

Their best effort came in the 20th minute when Vincent Pule struck a fierce free kick that was well saved by Arrows goalkeeper Sifiso Mlungwana.

The game followed a similar pattern after the halftime interval although the home team did look more threatening on the counter-attack.

It was from one such counter that Abafana Bes'thende nearly took the lead after 52 minutes but striker Knox Mutizwa was foiled by a brilliant last-ditch tackle by Happy Jele.

The Buccaneers continued to control possession but their attacking players such as Gabadinho Mhango, who is the league's top-scorer, Pule and Thembinkosi Lorch were well shackled by the Arrows defence.

The home side had a massive penalty shout with just four minutes of the game remaining as Seth Parusnath looked to be brought down by Pirates defender Ntsikelelo Nyauza but the referee waved played on.

In the end neither team could find the back of the net and had to settle for a goalless draw.
