Absa Premiership

AmaZulu, Highlands Park share the spoils

2019-01-12 22:52

Umlazi - AmaZulu failed to make their home advantage count as they played to a goalless draw with Highlands Park in the Absa Premiership on Saturday evening.

Usuthu and the Lions of the North both went into the encounter at King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium having scored five goals in their previous three games, but that scoring touch was sadly missing in a drab encounter lacking in goalmouth action.

The first half was a relatively low-key affair with goal-scoring chances at a premium for both sides in the opening 30 minutes.

The first real chance of note arrived after 13 minutes of play, AmaZulu's Nhlanhla Vilakazi heading wide of the left post after a cross from the left wing by Emiliano Tade.

The match eventually began to open up as the half wore on, with AmaZulu's Tade, Ovidy Karuru and Mbongeni Gumede failing to find the mark with their respective shots on goal.

At the opposite end of the pitch, the Lions of the North finally managed to fashion a couple of noteworthy chances. However, Ryan Rae dragged his driven shot wide of the left-hand upright before Mothobi Mvala fired high and wide from a free-kick just outside the box on the stroke of half-time.

And it was much the same after the half-time interval as the two sides struggled to create clear-cut chances.

AmaZulu's Tapelo Nyongo fired wide of the left-hand upright with a volleyed effort on the hour mark, while Peter Shalulile couldn't find the mark for Highlands Park with his 85th-minute strike.

The final chance of the match fell to AmaZulu's Siyethemba Sithebe, but the 26-year-old forward failed to capitalise as he fired wide of the mark in the fourth minute of injury time.
