Absa Premiership

AmaZulu down Baroka for 2nd win of the season

2019-10-27 18:10

Cape Town - Amazulu picked up only their second win of the season in the Absa Premiership with a 1-0 victory over Baroka in Polokwane on Sunday.

Bongi Ntuli's converted penalty early in the second half proved the difference between the two sides as Usuthu secured another valuable three points hot on the heels of their 2-1 victory over Cape Town City earlier this month.

The results suggest that new coach Jozef Vukusic might be starting to turn things around at the struggling club, although there is a lot of work to do with Amazulu still languishing in 15th place on the log with eight points.

As for Baroka, who are experiencing their own difficulties this season, the defeat was their fourth in a row in the South African top flight, and it leaves stuck in the bottom three only marginally ahead of Amazulu on goal difference.

The home side had the better of the exchanges during a quiet first half, although Amazulu probably had the best chance to score when Lehlohonolo Majoro fired his header on target from a corner, only for Elvis Chipezeze to prove equal to the task in goal.

The biggest moment of the match arrived just a few minutes into the second half when Martin Nsimbi was penalised for handling Majoro’s shot in the area.

Up stepped Ntuli to fire the ball home from the spot and put Usuthu in the lead.

Bakgaga tried to find a way into the match, and there were decent chances for Tshidiso Patjie and Collins Makgaka to equalise late in the game, but both opportunities were spurned as Amazulu held on for the valuable victory.
