AmaZulu claim vital win over CT City

2019-02-09 22:32
Umlazi - AmaZulu inched further away from the dreaded drop zone on Saturday night as Tapelo Nyongo's second-half free-kick secured a 1-0 victory over Cape Town City at King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium.

The first half was a closely contested affair, with both sides finding it tough to create clear-cut chances.

It would have been different story, though, had the Citizens grabbed their chance after just six minutes of play. The Citizens were awarded a penalty, but the chance went to waste as Kermit Erasmus saw his spot-kick saved by Siyabonga Mbatha in the AmaZulu goal.

Gift Links had a chance to break the deadlock in the 18th minute but was unable to capitalise, while at the opposite end of the pitch Michael Morton saw his 43rd-minute shot saved by City's Dutch 'keeper, Peter Leeuwenburgh.

AmaZulu's best chance of the first stanza came on the stroke of half-time, Nyongo heading over the bar from Jabulani Ncobeni's inviting cross.

However, Nyongo made amends in best possible fashion as he went on to score what would turn out to be the winning goal from a set-piece situation in the 64th minute. It was certainly a memorable goal, as Nyongo fired a powerful shot over the wall and into the top-right corner, just beyond the reach of Leeuwenburgh.

Benni McCarthy's men redoubled their efforts after falling behind and fashioned a good chance to draw level in the 79th minute. Craig Martin sent a cross towards the danger area, where Thami Mkhize was waiting to convert, but his shot was kept out by Mbatha.

But that was the last chance of note as AmaZulu held on to claim all three points and a second straight Absa Premiership victory.
