Ajax sign veteran defender Gaxa

Cape Town - Ajax Cape Town have announced the signing of veteran defender Siboniso Gaxa after the 33-year-old had been training at Ikamva for a number of weeks.

The Urban Warriors said in a statement: Ajax Cape Town are delighted to announce the signing of former Bafana Bafana international Siboniso 'Pa' Gaxa.

The 33-year-old has been training with his new teammates at Ikamva for the past few weeks, and is in line to make his Urban Warriors debut this Sunday; away to Polokwane City.

Gaxa has racked up close to 300 appearances in the Absa Premiership over the past 16 years and has won the league title on four occasions in a glittering career that includes spells at SuperSport United, Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and most recently current league champions Bidvest Wits.

He also enjoyed a two-year stint at Belgium club Lierse SK.

Having made his debut for Bafana Bafana in 2005, the versatile defender has gone on to represent his country on 54 occasions – most notable at the 2010 FIFA World Cup on home soil.

"I’m delighted to have joined Ajax Cape Town and I am really grateful to head coach Muhsin [Ertugral] and the management for the opportunity to play football again," said Gaxa.

"I am well aware of the situation the club finds itself in at the moment and I just want to help with my experience, I've played professionally for well over a decade and I believe I can contribute on and off the field in assisting this club move up the log standings.

Gaxa continued: "What I have seen here [at Ikamva], the talent is amazing, the club structure is something that has really impressed me and I am grateful to be part of this unique institution.

"I am really grateful to Mushin for showing faith in me and I can’t wait to start my journey here," he concluded.
