Cape Town - Ajax Cape Town have announced the promotion of Masilake Phohlongo from the U19 team to the PSL squad.
According to the club’s website, Phohlongo has featured frequently in the MultiChoice Diski Challenge team, as well as participated for this year’s PSL team in the ETV Charity Showdown and the Cape Town Cup
The Langa-born left footed playmaker signed his first professional contract and will join fellow Langa-born player Olwethu Nguye, in the PSL squad along with Bantu Mzwakali from Gugulethu and Ndiviwe Mdabuka from Mfuleni, as the club continues to live up to its principle of No Youth No Future.
“We are absolutely thrilled to have another young talent from our youth academy promoted into the PSL squad,” Ajax CEO, Ari Efstathiou.
“He is the first player to be promoted for the upcoming season, with several more youngters to be promoted before the start of the new season.
“From the current crop of ABC Motsepe and MDC players we are expecting at least five or six to be promoted in the PSL team.”
‘Scara’ as he is affectionately known, joined the Ajax Cape Town youth academy in 2008 at the age of 10, showing the makings of being a true playmaker with the added bonus of being a left footed player who’s silky skills were unstoppable from a young age.
“I am very very happy to see him sign his first professional contract. What better club to sign for than Ajax,” Phohlongo’s father, Sibongile said.
“He has been here since the age of 10, I’ve doing my part to support him all the way. He is really a good son. He just needs to keep listening to his coaches and work as hard as he can. Ajax have been promoting players every year, especially from the townships.
“We are so happy to see these boys making it in life. I’ve gotten to know all the other boys who came from the townships and went all the way into the PSL team, so I am very happy with the way Ajax have been handling things.
“This is definitely the club with the best development structure."
