Menzo sent packing by struggling Ajax

Cape Town - Ajax Cape Town have announced the sacking of head coach Stanley Menzo ahead of the New Year after a barren run with the Absa Premiership relegation candidates.

Menzo, 54, initially arrived at Ikamva as the head of youth development but assumed the role of head coach upon the resignation of Roger de Sa nearly 12 months ago.

A former Netherlands international goalkeeper, who was coached by the legendary Johann Cruyff during his career, the appointment seemed a match made in heaven.

But the Urban Warriors have taken steps back, playing an unattractive defensive brand of football while not picking up results.

After 14 games this season, Menzo leaves the Cape Town-based side in 15th place, with 13 points.

"I think that a coaching change is possibly the best for the club right now as we get to the critical part of the season," he told the club's website after his exit was confirmed.

"I would also like to thank the club for the opportunity that was given to me and to also thank all the staff and players who always supported me.

"A special mention to the fans for their great support even at times when things were really not going well. I wish the club the best for the remainder of the season."
