Ajax Cape Town keeper joins Reading

Cape Town - Ajax Cape Town goalkeeper Anssi Jaakkola has joined English Championship side Reading FC, according to reports.

The Finnish shot-stopper recently extended his contract for one more year with the Cape Town-based outfit, following widespread speculation over his future.

However, a source close to the dealings revealed that the player's agent, Sander Westerveld, had been in close contact with new Reading coach, Japp Stam.

"Everything happened very fast but yes, Anssi is gone and will be joining Reading. It obviously helped that Sander and Jaap played together for Holland," an unnamed source told KickOff.

The former Manchester United man was appointed as manager of the Championship outfit in June, following the dismissal of Brian McDermott.

The Royals departed for their pre-season tour of the Netherlands on Sunday, 10 June, with Jaakkola expected to meet up with his new teammates in a bid to improve on their 17th-place finish in England’s second tier ahead of the 2016/17 campaign.
