Sport24 reported last month when Lakay was a shock call-up to the senior national team squad with coach Shakes Mashaba offering the young Santos striker a chance to jump straight from the Under-20 squad to the senior set-up.
At the time, Lakay was eager to show his worth having said, “At the moment I am working very hard (in training camp). I’ve worked with coach Shakes (before with under-20), so I knew it was going to come some day but just came a bit sooner than I expected.”
And he added, “Different players achieve their goals at different ages but they should never give up because it’s never too late to follow your dreams, anything is possible.”
Nijkamp has now told African Football that the 17-year-old has shown that he has physical strength to go with his speed and technique.
“Fagrie is training with us now, but only began yesterday so it is still early days,” said Nijkamp.
“For his age he has good speed and technique. We are also impressed with his physical approach to the game at his age.”
“On Monday he will play in a friendly game for our under 23 side against Utrecht, and we will give him time to adapt."
