Cape Town - Bidvest Wits overtook Orlando Pirates to finish the Premiership season third with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Platinum Stars at Bidvest Stadium on Saturday.

Vincent Pule's first-half strike proved to be the difference between the sides on the day.

Both sides struggled to find their feet early on in the game and chances were hard to come by.

It wasn't until the 15th before the first meaningful shot on goal was fired. Masibusane Zongo used his strength to win a free kick for Platinum Stars, but the midfielder sent the set piece over the bar.

Wits began to dominate possession as the sought to take hold of the game and began to look threatening moving forward.

Jabulani Shogwe went beat three players down the left and his cross found Henrico Botes in the box but his shot was well saved.

Dikwena struggled to hang onto the ball and gave away possession often with some needlessly careless passing.

The Clever Boys broke the deadlock in the 28th minute when Vincent Pule skinned his man and fired home from 25 yards out.

The goal seemed to wake Platinum Stars up and they began to push for an equaliser but Mogakolodi Ngele shot was well saved by an in-form Moeneeb Josephs.

Dikwena struggled to break down the Wits defence and their attacks were repeatedly snuffed out before they became dangerous.

After the break Shongwe missed a glorious chance to double the Clever Boys lead when Tebogo Moerane found him with a pin-point cross, but the fullback shot wide from just three yards out.

Wits defended their lead with passion but continually crossed the line and committed as many as 26 fouls defending their lead.

The result sees the Johannesburg club move above Orlando Pirates and finish the season in third place, while Platinum Stars dropped one place to 11th as Black Aces earned a draw against Free State Stars.
