Cape Town - Bidvest Wits and Free State Stars will battle for a place in the next round of the Nedbank Cup when they clash at Bidvest Stadium.

Wits were runners-up in last year’s Nedbank Cup, overcoming Amabee FC, AmaZulu, Bloemfontein Celtic and Kaizer Chiefs before falling 3-1 in the final to Orlando Pirates.

Stars, meanwhile, fell at the first hurdle in the 2014 Nedbank Cup. The Free State side suffered a shock 1-0 home defeat at the hands of lower league side Witbank Spurs.

The Clever Boys and Ea Lla Koto have met in five previous cup matches. Wits have three wins compared to one for Stars, while one match ended in a draw before the Free State side claimed a penalty shootout victory.

The teams’ most recent cup clash was a Telkom Knockout quarterfinal in 2012 that ended goalless before Ea Lla Koto won 4-3 on penalties.

In all, the teams have met in 53 league and cup matches since 1986. Wits have 20 wins compared to Stars’ 14, while 19 matches have been drawn. The Clever Boys have won 12 of their 26 home matches against Stars while suffering four defeats in the process.

Wits won the teams’ most recent meeting, a league match in November last year which ended 2-0 in favour of the Johannesburg side.

The Clever Boys come into the match in fine form, having beaten Moroka Swallows 2-0 away in a league match in midweek. It was the Johannesburg side’s third straight win in 2015, having also beaten Maritzburg United in the PSL and Swaziland side Royal Leopards in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Stars, meanwhile, have played to two draws since the resumption of the PSL: 2-2 away to SuperSport United and 1-1 at home to University of Pretoria last weekend.

Kick-off is at 20:15 on Saturday, February 21.
