Wits stunned by Polokwane

Johannesburg - Wits have suffered a surprise Absa Premiership defeat on Wednesday, going down 2-0 at the Bidvest Stadium to visitors Polokwane City.

Goals in the 41st and 47th minute by Puleng Tlolane and substitute Dodam Bogere ensured City bagged the three points.

After efforts to penetrate the Clever Boys’ defence, an assist from defender Joseph Musonda down the right flank allowed Tlolane to finish with his right, foot thus giving the visitors a deserved lead before the interval.

Although the Citizens went to the tunnel leading and in control of the proceedings, the game was balanced, with both sides enjoying a fair share of possession and scoring opportunities.

However, after two minutes of action in the second half, substitute Bogere netted his first strike for Rise and Shine after an assist by the experienced Esau Kanyenda.

The first half was packed with end to end action as both sides showed their intentions. In the sixth minute, Wits captain Sibusiso Vilakazi was adjudged to have been on an offside position after rounding goalkeeper Modiri Marumo and passing the ball into the empty net.

A few minutes later, Moenneeb Josephs was called into action but he blocked Tshepo Tema’s effort.

With 20 minutes to go, the home side searched for the equaliser but their efforts were in vain as Kostadin Papic’s men stood their ground. Vukile Mngqibisa and Musonda were key in City’s defence.

In the 72nd minute, Kanyenda was quick to respond with a powerful shot, but Josephs made a fine save tipping it over the bar. However, there was no eye catching action towards the dying minutes of the match.

The final 10 minutes saw City remaining in control of the match as they claimed their second win of the season.
